Meeting Minutes

Last class we discussed our draft of our PSA project with another group. That group did give us some constructive criticism and good advice about trying to make it more clear that our ads are being used for a satirical purpose. After that we started working on editing our video and started and finished what we would be discussing after our video and ad presentation. For next class it is the presentation. We did work and finish editing our presentation and finalized our ads and questions for discussion afterwards.

Blog 10 Reflective Essay

In our PSA project, the hashtag, our target audience is college students and teens. We met that target by creating ads and a video which includes humor that most teens will find funny and interviews with college students and professor Yergeau. While we do focus on college students I believe our project could also target all twitter and active social media users. We have not really worked to meet their needs of social media users who are not college students but if we were to extend our project this would be a possible way to do so.

Our ultimate purpose was to educate social media users on the proper way to use the hashtag. We made this explicitly clear in our video where in the introduction we define how the founder of twitter intended the hashtag to be used. We also put links at the bottom of each of our ads that link to websites that tell more about what the hashtag is intended to be used for and the do’s and don’ts of using hashtags. Some rhetorical strategies we used were interviews and color contrast. We used color contrast to emphasize the satiric nature of the ads and we used interviews to show what the general population believed were the purpose of the ads. This population included two twitter users and one non twitter user.

This project has been challenging because I learned just how difficult editing the video was. We had about 8 minutes of footage and we worked to edit it to 3 minutes. This took some work and a hard decision to edit out one of our interviews. I also learned that these projects require lot of work and planning to perfect our presentation. In retrospect I think I would have tried doing more video work earlier and make a more clear plan before we started recording of what we are going to do.

This project as well as this class has shown me various ways that we can bring traditional rhetorical analysis to digital media. When we were analyzing the hashtag I learned that the hashtag is in fact another unique way of communication and is part of digital rhetoric. I learned that hastags can be an effective way to communicate and compose large complex ideas into few characters. Also this project has introduced me more to the idea of short composition. An example of this was while we were working on the ads. The ads needed to be short but also needed to express a message and idea about our topic. We were able to ultimately make our ads concise. I also learned more about the way video can be used to further understand rhetoric. Through video we were further able to prove our idea that people’s idea of what the hashtag is and does varies even amongst twitter users. Also our interviews provided interesting views on the hashtag which I would not have thought of. This class has taught me that many different media, not just books, can be analyzed and thought to have a greater meaning. It expanded the way I think of rhetoric and composition from just applying to literary to almost anything that can define a new way of communicating.

Studio Time

In Class today we worked on our ad campaigns as well as finished filming interviews. For this we split ourselves up, me and queresh went to work on the interviews. We interviewed four people two of which were twitter users and two were not twitter users. While we were doing that, Howie worked on creating the ad campaign posts.

For next class we would like to get some feed back on our ad campaign posts and our interviews in peer group review. After this we would like to edit all of our video footage and work more on the conclusion


Meeting minutes

Last class our group first made a script of what we would plan to say in our video,. Then we borrowed video equipment for some beginning shooting. Then we shot the introduction part of our video. We then uploaded this onto a hard drive and made some plans to begin interviewing on tuesday.

Scott McCloud’s reading was about comics and how one wants to frame certain aspects in a story or novel to increase meaning. Our PSA is about the overuse of the hashtag in social media. There will be a video where we will ask people about what they believe the issue with the hashtag is. Also we will ask if they are as annoyed as how much the hashtag has been overused and how it has been misused from what twitter originally intended for it to be used like. We would also like to promote some ad campaigns about the hashtag to raise awareness on how it has been overused. We hope through images and video to communicate our issues with the hashtag and how to not overuse it to annoy and ruin the privaledge for other people.

I think reading through Reinventing the Possibilities was a quite unique experience. I thought this because we as the reader can choose our own story and what to take out of it. I ended up just reading through various articles by clicking through the alphabets on the bottom and reading each individual article. Some commonplaces that I encountered were the new media commonplace, and an article of coming to common place. In the new media commonplace I learnt about various terms that can be used to describe rhetoric in new media literacies and their definitions and how they are used. I think the path i chose changed the way I learned and understood commonplace becuase I chose the articles to read and thus created my own way of learning. 

  In the burns video , the main argument is to spur on more writing within our younger generation. He does this by stating words on the screen and then showing babies playing with the I phone instead of actually trying to write. Some material or topei he invokes are powerful clips of video like the children playing with the i phone or the clip where the old lady was disassembling the typer writer. This is done by the author to show how we have been writing less and need to emphasize more on writing.

My 2 questions are : In Hall’s webtext do you believe that you have learned a new way of understanding material and new media? and In the video do you agree with Burns that we need to emphasize more on writing and publishing papers?

The research that we are doing for the Rhetorical Analysis is analyzing a video clip and analyzing the rhetorical strategies. I believe that we are working with a primary source because we have the video clip in front of us that we can analyze. We also have the original version of the video clip that was first published which also indicates that it is a primary source. Driscoll strategy is to approach this paper as if you are approaching a science project or experiment. she suggests to first Invent by doing background and introducing the subject and ultimately come up with a thesis. Then she suggests providing examples and then finally analyze the examples and then provide an example. These methods are helpful because they provide a useful way of organizing all of our information and it also provides a way to determine which examples are relevant. Some ethical considerations that I have personally had is am I paraphrasing this in a way that does not enfringe on plagiarism. Also one other ethical consideration is if I am properly examining and providing a possible message that doesn’t distort the original intent of the ad or video clip. I believe if Driscoll was in the room she would tell me to better organize my paper and make my examples more clear. She would also tell me to go into greater depth in my analysis. They would also want to ensure that my work has taken ethical considerations at every step.
